New York based women’s ready to wear designer, Snow Xue Gao, founded her eponymous brand in 2016 immediately following her debut spring/summer 2017 show at Parsons New School of Art and Design where she received a Masters of Fashion. Following the company’s inception, Snow’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection was chosen to be one of three emerging designers featured at the V-Files fashion show during New York Fashion Week in February 2017. Having received critical acclaim from Vogue, I-D and WWD, the collection was immediately picked up by specialty boutiques worldwide. Snow’s intricately draped and tailored line breaks away from conventional definitions of masculine and feminine through an exploration of exaggerated proportions, asymmetrical finishes and contrasting textures. Fine Italian wool plaids and jacquards are tucked and twisted with floral silk prints to create a trompe l’oeil illusion — a blazer transforms into a skirt; wool suiting is inlayed with traditional Chinese dress — conceptually merging her Asian heritage and Western culture.
Influence Of Heritage
Born and raised in Beijing where she received a Bachelor of Arts from the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, Snow Xue Gao moved to New York City to study at Parsons New School where she received a Masters of Fine Art. Immediately following her graduation, Snow launched her eponymous collection with a desire to explore the balance between tradition and modern culture. Featuring Italian and English wool suiting inlayed with Chinese floral printed silks, Snow Xue Gao conceptually merges her Asian heritage with Western culture.
Influenced by her experience in the design department at Jason Wu and producing her graduate collection under the tutelage of Martin Greenfield, Snow’s intricately draped and tailored line breaks away from conventional definitions of masculine and feminine. Men’s suits are deconstructed, proportions are exaggerated and classic silhouettes are twisted to accentuate waistlines.
While fabrics are sourced globally, the Snox Xue Gao collection is designed and produced locally in New York City. Her creative process begins with a discovery period at local NYC vintage shops where she uncovers styles and silhouettes from bygone eras that can be reimagined as contemporary pieces. Using her signature draping technique, Snow cuts and contours each idea into bold shapes.
